SOIL COMPACTION AND STABILITY

SOIL COMPACTION AND STABILITY By: Charles S. Gresser, P.E., Construction Materials Testing Division Manager It’s difficult to stick with the basics if you can’t remember them. Here’s a brief review of the fundamentals of soil compaction and stability, along with advice about dealing with unstable subgrades.

Standard or Modified Proctor Density?

The original test was the "standard" Proctor. It uses a 5.5 lb rammer falling 12" for 25 times in each of 3 layers within a standard mold in the lab. The modified Proctor uses a 10 lb rammer falling 18", also in a standard mold. Get a copy of each standard (ASTM D698 for standard Proctor and ASTM D1557 for modified Proctor) and read it.

laboratory. The most common is the Proctor Test, or Modified Proctor Test. A particular soil needs to have an ideal (or optimum) amount of moisture to achieve maximum density. This is important not only for durability, but will save money because less compaction effort is needed to achieve the desired results. Proctor Test (ASTM D1557-91)

Compaction Test - Proctor Test

AASHTO or Modified Proctor Test. Standard Proctor Test is not sufficient for airways and highways where heavier compaction is required. US Army Corps of Engineers developed Modified Proctor Test which used greater levels of compaction and produced higher densities. Modified Proctor Test was alter adopted by AASHTO and ASTM.
